Lesson 3: Video – Working with children and their families at the library

The videos in this lesson feature a librarian talking about her learnings and experiences on working with inclusive children’s groups. They will cover:

  1. Understanding behaviour and emotions (approx. 30 minutes)
  2. Guiding behaviour (approx. 20 minutes)
  3. Support and strategies for guiding behaviour (approx. 20 minutes)
  4. Working with families addressing discriminatory or negative comments (approx. 10 minutes)

The videos are mainly for library staff who facilitate Storytime, Rhymetime and other library activities with children aged 0–6 years. The first three videos focus on understanding children’s behavior, and how to guide children positively.

A variety of strategies are provided for staff to help children participate in groups and respond to challenging behaviour.

The final video provides strategies to address negative comments or actions by parents in the group, other library visitors or staff.

The videos are in development and will be available in 2023.
