An introduction to paediatric occupational therapy

You may be wondering: what does an occupational therapist do?
Occupational therapists (or an OT) support your child to participate in everyday activities. Sessions can be held at home, in education settings, on the phone or online, in the community or at our Marrickville centre. Goals can include dressing, mealtimes, sleeping, toileting, and playing.

Occupational therapists help your child build independence in daily routines. This includes improving fine motor skills (using their hands) and gross motor skills (strength, balance, and coordination). OTs assist with sensory processing, which is how the brain interprets information from senses like sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. They can also support the development of executive functioning skills, such as planning, organising, focusing, remembering instructions and self-regulation—the ability to understand and manage emotions and reactions to different situations.

Occupational therapists work with you and other caregivers to help your child take part in everyday activities more fully wherever they are. They can suggest modifications to the environment for more independence. Your therapist will use your child’s interests in play-based activities to make learning fun!

Plumtree is more than a clinic: our family-centred approach is the gold standard in early childhood intervention. Most of a child’s learning happens with their family and carers between therapy sessions. That’s why we actively work with parents during sessions. You will learn strategies to use in your child’s natural environment at home, school, or in the community to achieve your goals.

Here’s what our OTs say about their work and how they can support your child:
